Pesto & Zucchini Tart

In South-Africa, most cities are now experiencing cool mornings and evenings, which means that Autumn is here. I absolutely love this time of year when salads become stews and soups and I can start wearing my favourite coats and boots. I am after all, a Winter baby. But I do get sad when I walk into the produce section of a supermarket and the only fruit on offer are citrus related. There’s just nothing like the fresh nectarines, peaches, watermelon and grapes you get in Summer. And the same goes for vegetables. But I’m very excited to be experimenting with root vegetables, mushrooms etc. this Winter. So to bid Summer…

Pasta with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, Ricotta and Pesto

When I first started cooking meatless meals I thought constantly whether I would be able to do it once a week, I never though there was more than maybe 5 proper meal options. But it turned out that the more I cooked vegetarian food, the more ideas came to me. Most often, the ideas that come easiest are pasta dishes. It’s very easy to create a filling and delicious meal without meat when you have pasta as a base to work from. It can be incredibly simple or really complicated but it’s very hard to go wrong with pasta. In Nigella’s new book “Kitchen”, she has a recipe for Marmite…

Gnocchi with Gorgonzola and Walnuts

The very first time I ever had Gnocchi was at a small Italian restaurant in Pretoria and I had absolutely no idea what I was ordering. All I knew was that I liked the sound of the Gorgonzola sauce that came with it. I think I must’ve been about 14 or 15 at the time and I know that I was probably the only teenager who was willing and eager to eat rotten cheese. Even now, 10 years later, most of my friends don’t like the idea of Gorgonzola, or anything stronger than Cheddar or Gouda. I am very fortunate in that regard. My mother raised us as very adventurous…

Roasted Aubergine & Feta Fritters Cakes

I don’t know about you, but when a cookbook author describes a dish as “Interesting”, I kind of lose interest. Especially when it’s a vegetarian recipe. I might be the only one who thinks like this but, I don’t want my food to be interesting. I want it to be delicious, scrumptious, to-die-for etc. Interesting? Not so much. So when I saw a version of this recipe in one of my mom’s old cookbooks, I was intrigued but also a tiny bit wary. The title was “Eiervrug koekies – ‘n interessante alternatief vir Vegetariers” (directly translated from Afrikaans : “Eggplant cakes – an interesting alternative for Vegetarians”. Not exactly the…

potato pasta- foodgawker (1 of 1)

I want to start this post by saying that I am beyond Exhausted. In the last 48 hours I have flown to Cape Town, met people who will now be life-long friends (other food bloggers), had dinner at the incredible Reuben’s at the One&Only Cape Town, slept for 6 hours, went to the Food and Wine Bloggers’ Indaba, spent the day laughing, drinking wine and learning, got on a plane at 22h00 last night, arrived in Johannesburg at 23h50 and slept for 7 hours until my twins pried my eyes open and said “halloooo mama, foodie time pleaseeeee” . I have to also add that the Indaba was such an…

Zucchini, Feta and Mint Quiche

I am a huge fan of the whole “Meatless Monday” movement. My family (especially the men other than my husband) are not. They believe that “Meat is meat and a man must eat” and that chicken is a side dish. My dad has started to come around to the idea and my husband went on a bit of a Meat Strike when he was younger so he doesn’t mind too much either. But my uncles and cousins just don’t get why I’m even trying to do vegetarian meals. Phrases like “bunny food” and “hippie nonsense” are often heard when I talk about Meatless Mondays. Nevertheless, I will not stop with…
