Marinated cherry tomatoes with whipped ricotta

I saw someone doing marinated tomatoes on tv not so long ago and for the life of me, I can’t remember who it was. I can’t even remember on which channel it was which makes me feel horrible as I can’t give credit where credit is due. I am however very thankful to that person for exposing me to the wonder that is a marinated tomato. I know the thought of blanching then peeling and then marinating cherry tomatoes is not appealing. I thought I had gone crazy when I found myself even considering the idea of trying it myself. You see, I’m a very lazy person. I love…

Marinara Sauce

As you might recall from my Cheesy Meatballs post, I have an intense desire to be like a real Italian Mama one day. I want my children to adore me like Italian children adore their mothers and I want my children to know that at my house, there will always be food and laughter to comfort and nourish them. But, just like I said in my Cheesy Meatballs post, I can dream of being a little Italian Mama until I’m blue in the face, because I’ll never be little nor Italian. But what I can do, is strive to cook like one. I might have the wrong idea here, but…

Tomato braised lamb shanks

Now, it might not be ‘comfort food’ season in South Africa but it certainly is in the Northern Hemisphere. And quite honestly, yesterday I needed comfort food. It was one of THOSE days where I was irritated and the twins were acting up. I often wonder why kids have this ability to be at their most difficult and challenging when you are on edge and out of patience. But good news, we made it through the day and we were all in need of this comforting, rich and delicious meal. Of all the cuts of Lamb, the shank is my absolute favourite. I love how it goes soft and sticky…

Bacon, feta & tomato quiche

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I LOVE QUICHE. For me, there is nothing better on a warm night than eating delicious quiche with a crisp salad. I think the love of this combination stems back to when I was a little girl and my mother used to take me to Tiffany’s, a little coffee shop in the mall close to us. She used to order Quiche Lorraine and it always came with a green salad with the most AMAZING salad dressing. I remember licking the cucumber and lettuce, to the utter embarrassment and disgust of my poor mom, just to get the salad dressing off. I…

Creamy Peppered Mackerel on Baguette

I am a bread addict. There, I said it. Everything about bread is just perfect to me. The crunchy crust, the soft, pillowy ‘inners’. I mean really, what’s not to like? For this reason, and this reason alone, I will never be able to do Atkins or any other ‘carb-free’ diet. I need bread! I don’t eat it everyday, but there is just nothing better than freshly baked Baguette or Ciabatta with oodles of butter/olive oil and a good wedge of cheese. Oooh, throw in some onion marmalade and maybe some fresh rocket…ok let me stop before my keyboard is covered in drool. I think this is my version of…

Tamatie Bredie (Lamb & Tomato Stew)

Most South Africans have a memory of Tamatie Bredie (Tomato stew in Afrikaans), but I am not one those South Africans. I absolutely hated stew as a child so whenever it was made, I ate salad or bread instead. I also didn’t like rice so I couldn’t even enjoy the rich sauce. But as I grew older I realised what I had been missing. Stew in any shape or form is just so luscious and comforting that I now, can’t believe what a picky brat I must’ve been. I’ve been reading about Tamatie Bredie for years now and never thought about making it, I really don’t know why. And yesterday…

IMG_5759-2

I saw Jamie Oliver cooking this in his “Jamie at Home’ series and really liked the sound of it. Uncomplicated, delicious and easy food. Chicken is such a staple in our home and we eat it at least twice a week, and thinking of new ways to eat it becomes quite hard after you’ve tried it 300 different ways (this might be an exaggeration but I’m pretty sure it’s close enough to 300) . I don’t normally like cooked tomatoes that much (unless they are in a sauce etc.) but the sweetness of the cherry tomatoes works so well with the crispy, salty chicken skin. If it’s possible, I made…

budget lamb curry

Once again, I’m aware that lamb is not the cheapest cut of meat therefore a lot of people don’t buy it. But it sure is nice when you find some lamb on special and you can make something seriously delicious but still budget-friendly with it. I find curries and stews to be the best money-saver dishes out there as the meat is usually the cheapest of all the cuts. You can also use relatively little meat and just bulk the dish up with vegetables, which adds nutrition and flavour. That’s what I’ve done with this curry. You could use less meat if you please but with this amount it’s quite…

Roasted Roots Risotto

Roasted Roots Risotto. Don’t you just love the sound of that? Alliteration at it’s best I tell you! Of course, this is yet another recipe to add to “Ally’s Love Affair with Risotto”. I love Risotto so much that I even added it as a category in my recipe index. I used to just add it under vegetarian, seafood etc. But as I now have more Risotto recipes than I ever thought I would, I thought I should do them justice and at least give them their own category. After all, Risotto is my current obsession. Last night, I managed to convert both my older brother and my Sister in…
