Steak & Egg with herbed chilli-butter

When I think of Steak and egg (with chips of course), I always think of my dad and one of my mom’s favourite films, Shirley Valentine. I think about my dad because when I was younger this was the one meal that stood out for me which my dad made really well. His steak was always melt-in-the-mouth and his chips were the best chips in the world. I think about Shirley Valentine because of her husband who always demanded his steak & egg on a Monday, I think it was. She eventually got fed-up, threw the steak & egg against the wall and went to Greece to have love…

It’s the 1st of August. How is it the 1st of August already? I say it every year and every year I feel like it’s going faster and faster. I sometimes feel overwhelmed at how quickly the years seem to be flying past me. When I was in school I was SO excited when the year’s would fly past because it would mean our December holidays were upon us, but now, I don’t know how I’m going to get everything done I still need to get done this year. But then, this is how I always feel and what doesn’t get done this year, always seems to get done the…

Fried Rice with Beef

I have had such an incredibly lazy week, cooking wise. Usually at least once a week I try to make something that requires at least a little bit of brain power, but this week I did the bare minimum. I feel quite guilty saying that I’m tired (ok exhausted) and lazy when most of my friends are moms who work all day and then come home to kids, cooking and laundry. I really can’t imagine that I would ever cook if I wasn’t a stay-at-home-mom. I would seriously pick up a Rotisserie chicken and salad from the supermarket every night, so for those of you who are cooking their families…

Chicken Fried Steak

As I’ve mentioned over and over, my mother disliked cooking… quite a bit. I’ve often said that I find absolutely comfort in cooking, stirring a pot of Risotto is like therapy to me. It’s time that I get to clear my mind, forget about sticky floors, bananas shoved under my couch and yogurt in my hair. When I cook I feel at peace. My mom never felt any of that. Her staple dishes were things she could throw into one casserole dish and shove in the oven for a couple of hours. But when the ‘domestic goddess’ in her started getting anxious, she made Chicken-Fried Steak, although, we never knew…

Corn on the cob (Mielies)

First of all, I’d like to congratulate PolkadotCupcake! Congratulations on winning the Case of wine’s from Caroline’s Wine Warehouse! We will be in touch soon! I woke up this morning with the intention of posting my Chicken Teriyaki recipe with you, but then I saw what a gorgeous day it was in Pretoria and I knew that I just had to post something about braaing (barbecuing). As the Northern Hemisphere is moving into Spring, we are moving into Autumn and even though the days are still lovely, the morning and evenings are getting quite chilly, so I will be spending as much time outdoors as I possibly can and what…

Thai Beef Salad

Now I know that Thai food has been around for a long time and almost everyone I know likes it. But still, I rarely venture into that direction of cooking and I’m not sure why. I think I’m always a bit worried that my dad isn’t going to like it. You see, my dad is very conventional with his tastes. I think he’s at his happiest when I serve him garlic-butter Spaghetti. So adding ginger, lemon grass and the like to a dish might give him the fright of his life. While I was grilling the steaks and making the dressing, I asked my younger brother to come have a…

Steak

I’ll come right out and say it. I don’t like Steak. Yes, once again, I expect to be thrown with rotten tomatoes. I seriously would rather eat a juicy lamb chop or a nice fatty pork chop than eat steak. The only steak I don’t mind, is fillet. So for me, the most important part of steak is the sauce. I usually top a palm-sized steak with about 2 ladles of sauce. But then again, I am a bit of a sauce slut. If I could have creamy mushroom or pepper sauce with vegetables I would..actually, I think I have! So for me, it’s less about the marinade but more…

Cheesy nachos with steak

It’s that time of the month again, the time where I need to get my Mexican fix. As you’ll remember from my Mexican Feast post, I have as much of an obsession with Mexican food as I do with Indian food. It must be because both cuisines are based on fabulous spices and fresh flavours. I’ve never actually asked anyone, but I’m sure there aren’t many people that don’t like Nachos. There must be something about oozy, cheesy covered chips served with creamy guacamole and a sprinkling of fiery chillies that make people swoon.  Well it definitely makes me swoon. You could make this with chicken, fish, ground beef or…
