Coconut Prawn Curry

When I buy a tray of fresh prawns from my local fishmonger, the excitement can be likened to that of a child at the circus. I am never left without inspiration when I cook prawns and often feel like I want to make not only one but a few different dishes to really make the most of them. Especially as they are not the cheapest of ingredients and are considered quite a treat by my family and I. I decided to make a creamy coconut curry with the prawns over the weekend and wanted to use the shells and heads to infuse even more prawn flavour into the curry so…

Moussaka with Roasted Aubergine

I don’t know about you, but when I think of Moussaka, I think of the aubergines (or eggplant/brinjals as they’re also known) in it. I think that it’s going to be a mission to salt them, dry them and fry them before adding them to the Moussaka. That thought alone is enough to put me off doing it. The problem is though, that my husband would give his two front teeth for a good aubergine dish. So every now and then the guilt works just enough and I am willing to spend hours in the kitchen. That was until last week when I knew my husband would love me just…

Spicy Lamb & Lentil Soup

With Winter’s icy arrival, there are few things that bring me absolute comfort. A steaming mug of NoMu’s Hot Chocolate on the couch watching Brothers & Sisters, a hug from my husband and a warm bath are pretty much it. Oh, and of course food! Stews, soups and curries warm me from the inside and makes me incredibly happy. So when I combine a curry and a soup, you better know I’m going to love it. And not only did I love this, my whole family did as well. My sister-in-law said that this was “de-freakin-licious” which is exactly what I wanted to hear. What makes this recipe even better…

Chilli-Chicken Meatballs

Last week, in an attempt to use up some chicken sausage in my freezer, I made these meatballs because I was so completely out of ideas. It turns out that they were insanely good and even got a “mmmm, this is REALLY good” out of my non-foodie husband. Even better is that my kids both had 3 meatballs with their spaghetti (without the chilli, obviously). I know so many of you might think that I plan our meals weeks in advance and have all the ingredients in the house all the time, but I really don’t. As much as possible I like to plan at least a week in advance…

It seems like winter is finally on his way out of Gauteng. Even though I am incredibly excited to start making salads and REALLY excited to have sweet watermelon in the house, I got a bit panicky. You see, I don’t make stews and curries in summer. Well very, very rarely anyway.  I just can’t stand over a hot stove when it’s so hot outside that I could actually cook the curry on the pavement. So last night, I just knew I had to make some curry to bid winter a hearty farewell. I will miss him again in December when it’s too hot to breathe, but for now, I…

Tamatie Bredie (Lamb & Tomato Stew)

Most South Africans have a memory of Tamatie Bredie (Tomato stew in Afrikaans), but I am not one those South Africans. I absolutely hated stew as a child so whenever it was made, I ate salad or bread instead. I also didn’t like rice so I couldn’t even enjoy the rich sauce. But as I grew older I realised what I had been missing. Stew in any shape or form is just so luscious and comforting that I now, can’t believe what a picky brat I must’ve been. I’ve been reading about Tamatie Bredie for years now and never thought about making it, I really don’t know why. And yesterday…
