As I write this post, my teeth are chattering and my knees are shaking. It’s officially Winter! It’s been chilly for the last couple of weeks but this morning, my hot tea doesn’t seem to have the same power as it did a few weeks ago. But don’t think I’m complaining, not for a second! I’m a good and proper Winter baby. Born in the middle of Winter must surely have an effect on how you feel about the season and I just absolutely love it. By August I start yearning for the freshness and ‘lightness’ of Summer but other than that, I love everything about Winter. I especially love…

Chilli Con Carne Soup

I am a really big fan of Chilli Con Carne. I love that it can be simply eaten in a bowl with a good grating of cheese or it can be transformed into something more elaborate served with guacamole, salsa and sour cream. That’s why I thought the idea of a spicy Chilli Con Carne soup rich with aromatic flavours would be a really good one. I’ve been adding cocoa powder to my Chilli’s for a few year’s now after first seeing a recipe for Mexican Mole (a rich sauce made with chocolate served with meat) and the depth of flavour it adds is just incredible. The first time I…

I know many people are fond of the old classic, Pea & Ham soup. Although I don’t have anything against it, I wanted to update it slightly and play around with the flavours a bit more. I think the combination of split peas with the smoky ham is always a good one, but I wanted to see how the flavours would be enhanced by using roasted pork instead. I also added carrots and potatoes to give the soup a bit more body and also took the soup from the muted green that most people are used to into a winter-friendly warm orange. I think my family preferred this as most…

Chicken Curry Soup

Today, it is Freezing in Pretoria. Absolutely toe-numbing, teeth chattering freezing. And the only thing I want to do is jump back under the covers with a bowl of this soup…even though it’s only 07:40am. When I told some friends that I was making Chicken Curry soup, the response was quite amusing. Some said it sounds good, some said it sounds strange and some just nodded and smiled. Trust me on this one, this is incredible. It really is just a basic chicken curry recipe that I added extra chicken stock and cream to. It’s that simple. And I decided to make Naan bread with it which is just as…

Everywhere I look lately I see tomato soup recipes and photo’s. This might be the reason why I was so amped to make it last week, and why my husband was so surprised to find out that I’d never made or eaten tomato soup before. I think it’s the fact that in our high school Home Economics class, the teacher always said you can’t make tomato soup in certain pots, I think it was Aluminium, because the acid in the tomatoes react with the Aluminium and this gives the soup a metallic taste. The thought of that petrified me and I was always too scared to make it. Meanwhile, we only…

Smooth Vegetable soup with Bacon & Feta

During the colder months, sometimes all you need to warm your tummy is a bowl of good soup and a chunk of crusty bread. There is no easier meal during the winter months than soup, even if it takes a while to cook. And if you have a slow-cooker, then you have even less excuse. When making soups, it’s very important to remember that the two main components that make up the soup, need to be of the best quality you can afford. In this case, the vegetables I chose are in season and organic. I do understand that buying organic isn’t cheap and I am definitely not going to…

Spicy Lamb & Lentil Soup

With Winter’s icy arrival, there are few things that bring me absolute comfort. A steaming mug of NoMu’s Hot Chocolate on the couch watching Brothers & Sisters, a hug from my husband and a warm bath are pretty much it. Oh, and of course food! Stews, soups and curries warm me from the inside and makes me incredibly happy. So when I combine a curry and a soup, you better know I’m going to love it. And not only did I love this, my whole family did as well. My sister-in-law said that this was “de-freakin-licious” which is exactly what I wanted to hear. What makes this recipe even better…

Continuing with the budget theme, I thought, nothing is cheaper and more comforting than a good soup. Especially if you cut out the cream and you chop the veg yourself. I have a weakness for the already cut butternut in shops but this adds to the price and it’s unnecessary. If you have a good sharp knife and a good peeler, you can do it in no time yourself. Soup is also great because you can really use whatever you have in the house. Make a gorgeous and nutritious vegetable soup from left over carrots, celery, potatoes. tomatoes and a tin of beans. Add some chicken/beef if you have it….

With this intensely icy weather our country is experiencing at present, the only food that should be served are the ones that warm your tummy, soul and heart. And of course, yet again, soup has come to the rescue. As I’m typing this, my fingers are blue, but this soup recipe is one that you HAVE to have in your arsenal so I shall continue! I actually can’t believe I’ve gone all winter without making this soup. I’m not really crazy about mushrooms, especially not on pizza or in quiche, but there’s something about a bowl of creamy mushroom soup paired with a big chunk of crispy bread that just…

potato & leek soup

It’s quite unusual for me to post two similar recipe, two days in a row. But I couldn’t resist posting this delish recipe for Potato & leek soup today. I think most people have potato & leek soup as part of their top 5 soups because the flavours are so simple but it always ends up being so good. Most people also have their own twists on the recipe to make it their own. Mine is to add some Dijon & wholegrain mustard to the pureed soup. It just adds a little zing and depth without over powering the subtle flavours of the leeks and potatoes. I also like to…
