Grilled fish on Lemon Pilaf

Every afternoon, Chris (the husband) asks me what we’re having for dinner. Yesterday I answered with “Grilled Angelfish with lemon pilaf and salad”. I only hope I had a camera on hand to capture his facial expression. He was shocked. “But that’s a tropical fish. People keep them in their aquariums. I think my cousin had one once.” I laughed and said it couldn’t possibly be the same fish as I’m sure Woolworths isn’t selling precious tropical fish for human consumption. After some Googling, we saw that it was indeed, not the same fish but what we South Africans call Angelfish is also known as Brama Brama, Atlantic Angelfish or…

Fried Rice with Beef

I have had such an incredibly lazy week, cooking wise. Usually at least once a week I try to make something that requires at least a little bit of brain power, but this week I did the bare minimum. I feel quite guilty saying that I’m tired (ok exhausted) and lazy when most of my friends are moms who work all day and then come home to kids, cooking and laundry. I really can’t imagine that I would ever cook if I wasn’t a stay-at-home-mom. I would seriously pick up a Rotisserie chicken and salad from the supermarket every night, so for those of you who are cooking their families…

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again, I love India. I’ve never actually been there but my mind has been taken away on a Turmeric flavoured cloud many times in my life. I love the vibrant colours, the intense aroma’s and the beautiful Sari’s. I would easily walk around in a blinged-out Sari with jewels dripping off of me everyday. I wouldn’t say Indian cuisine is my absolute favourite but it’s definitely in my top 3. There is just nothing like walking into a kitchen where a pot of curry is on the stove. The smell is intoxicating and I am almost always reduced to a…

First of all, I’d like to congratulate Kiara Rossouw for winning Justin Bonello’s, Cooked Weekends Away. The book is on it’s way Kiara! If you didn’t win last week, don’t despair. This week we are giving away Antony Worrall Thompson’s GI Diet, thanx to Penguin Publishers. This really is a great book to have if you’re looking at eating healthier but not sure where to start. The book discusses the Low GI Diet in depths and gives a detailed list of low, medium and high GI foods. It also gives you loads of tips on how to make ordinary dishes low gi etc.The Recipes range from fabulous breakfast ideas like…

Pilaf

After all the excitement of this weekend and the SA BLOG AWARDS, it feels like I should be doing a lot more than just sharing my recipe for Pilaf with you. But after all, that’s why you guys love reading this blog, to get the recipes! For someone who always claimed she doesn’t like rice, I’ve become quite adventurous with it lately. Everything from Risotto to Kedgeree and now Pilaf. Soon I’ll be attempting a proper Paella but that’s still a bit daunting for now, especially since I saw it being made on Master Chef Australia! Pilaf, also know as Pilau, supposedly has it’s origins in Afghanistan. Now, I don’t…

Tamatie Bredie (Lamb & Tomato Stew)

Most South Africans have a memory of Tamatie Bredie (Tomato stew in Afrikaans), but I am not one those South Africans. I absolutely hated stew as a child so whenever it was made, I ate salad or bread instead. I also didn’t like rice so I couldn’t even enjoy the rich sauce. But as I grew older I realised what I had been missing. Stew in any shape or form is just so luscious and comforting that I now, can’t believe what a picky brat I must’ve been. I’ve been reading about Tamatie Bredie for years now and never thought about making it, I really don’t know why. And yesterday…

I’ve got a fascination with American Food. Not burgers, fries and deep fried butter (yes, such a thing does exist). No, I’m interested in the real cuisine of America. Long before Jamie’s American Road Trip, I was interested in the dishes that I’ve heard about, seen on tv and read about. Pumpkin Pie, Chicken & Dumplings and Gumbo are just a few of the dishes that I’ve always wanted to try. Recently I made Pumpkin Pie and it was really delicious, but how I wish I could eat it there, made by Paula Deen or the like. I’m also constantly on Martha Stewart’s website. There is NOTHING you can’t find…

Once again, I’m aware that lamb is not the cheapest cut of meat therefore a lot of people don’t buy it. But it sure is nice when you find some lamb on special and you can make something seriously delicious but still budget-friendly with it. I find curries and stews to be the best money-saver dishes out there as the meat is usually the cheapest of all the cuts. You can also use relatively little meat and just bulk the dish up with vegetables, which adds nutrition and flavour. That’s what I’ve done with this curry. You could use less meat if you please but with this amount it’s quite…

Short Rib Bourguignon

I think most of us know what Boeuf Bourguignon is by now…especially if you’ve watched Julie&Julia. Julie Powell could not stop raving about her childhood memories of her mother cooking Boeuf Bourguignon when guests came around, but it wasn’t any Boeuf Bourguignon, it was Julia’s Boeuf Bourguignon. Every time she said “Boeuf Bourguignon” my stomach grumbled and I was anxiously waiting for winter to come so I could finally try it out. The only problem is that I really don’t like Beef..sorry I meant Boeuf. That’s why it’s taken me so long to try it. I’ve been trying to research all different cuts of meat to see which will have…
