Every Saturday morning, without fail, I crave a good breakfast. And almost every Saturday morning, without fail, I kick myself for not being more prepared for this craving. I’m always left with only eggs and bread. No bacon or sausages in sight. Which means that we usually dress ourselves in lightning speed and set off to find good breakfast elsewhere. The only issue I have with that is that it seems the whole of Pretoria has the same idea and every good breakfast spot is packed to the rafters with chic-breakfast-eaters with dark glasses, iPhones and skinny jeans. Not exactly toddler-territory. So we settle on a mediocre (at best)…

Roast Chicken with Duck Fat Roast Potatoes

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know that 90% of the time I like to keep things simple and easy. There are times when I am more than happy to spend the whole day in the kitchen testing recipes and trying out the harder stuff, but most of the time, simple is best in my books. And there is no meal more delicious than a simple meal of really good Roast chicken with crisp roast potatoes. There is just nothing like it. The aromas wafting through your house while it’s in the oven will make everyone salivate and eating the juicy, flavourful chicken just warms every…

Potato Rösti

I don’t know how it happened, but I married the one man in South Africa who is not THAT into food. He likes good food and appreciates my cooking, but I could just as easily prepare the same thing every night and he won’t complain. But there are a few things he will give his two front teeth for. Cauliflower Cheese, good creamy pasta, bacon and potato rösti are some of those things. When I made these to accompany the Indian-Spiced Lamb chops a few nights ago, my husband said that he could eat them all day, everyday and he would never get sick of them. It has something to…

Stuffed Potato small (1 of 1)

So as you probably know by now, my family and I are on holiday at the moment as South Africa is celebrating our wonderful Summer (although right now it’s more like Cape Town in Winter… rainy, windy and misty). We are incredibly fortunate to be in one of the most beautiful areas of the country close to the Garden Route. I know I promised posts about all the wonderful things we’ll be doing but honestly, I just don’t get time to spend in front of my laptop. If we’re not busy playing on the beach or exploring on the rocks, we’re eating ice cream or cooking something incredible! This holiday…

Some days, food is the only thing that  can make me happy. Seriously! The kids drive me insane, my husband irritates me, the domestic frustrates me… you get the picture. It also happens to be that on those days, my newly painted nails get smudged or the new bottle of foundation I bought the day before breaks. It might be that it’s ‘that time of the month’ or that the stars aren’t aligned (which I don’t believe in) but honestly, the only silver lining on days like those, is the food I will be eating at the end of the day. Breakfast and lunch during the week is very, very…

Even though fish & chips is such an easy and common meal, I’ve never made it myself. I’m a slight bit intimidated by deep frying things. I’m always scared the food doesn’t cook properly and I also don’t want the batter to burn. But armed with delicious beer batter and the freshest Kabeljou in Gauteng, I was ready to start. I was told by my fishmonger that Hake is good for fish ‘n chips but that Kabeljou, Baracuda and Kingklip all give great flavour and a bit of meatiness. Now Kingklip is in the orange category on SASSI’s list and Baracuda, well it just scares me to think of it…

It seems like winter is finally on his way out of Gauteng. Even though I am incredibly excited to start making salads and REALLY excited to have sweet watermelon in the house, I got a bit panicky. You see, I don’t make stews and curries in summer. Well very, very rarely anyway.  I just can’t stand over a hot stove when it’s so hot outside that I could actually cook the curry on the pavement. So last night, I just knew I had to make some curry to bid winter a hearty farewell. I will miss him again in December when it’s too hot to breathe, but for now, I…

I saw Jamie Oliver cooking this in his “Jamie at Home’ series and really liked the sound of it. Uncomplicated, delicious and easy food. Chicken is such a staple in our home and we eat it at least twice a week, and thinking of new ways to eat it becomes quite hard after you’ve tried it 300 different ways (this might be an exaggeration but I’m pretty sure it’s close enough to 300) . I don’t normally like cooked tomatoes that much (unless they are in a sauce etc.) but the sweetness of the cherry tomatoes works so well with the crispy, salty chicken skin. If it’s possible, I made…

Potato & Cheese Pie

Yet another Carb-loaded dish. There’s not a single thing I can think of that’s better on a cold winter’s day than loads of warm and comforting carbs. Add some cheese and cream and you have comfort heaven! So when I saw the idea for this potato pie in the latest issue of F&HE, I knew I had to try it. I didn’t really look at the recipe, just the gorgeous photo and thus, my recipe is probably slightly different to theirs. I added loads of cheese to mine to make it really moorish and the end result was really delicious. I think this would be PERFECT with Sunday roast or…

Ultimate Potato Bake - Potato Dauphinoise - Potato Au Gratin

For me, potato bake is the ultimate treat when it comes to carbs. I know most Atkins followers would sooner die than even look at this recipe but I don’t think there is anything more satisfying than soft potatoes enrobed in creamy, flavourful sauce, topped with mountains of salty cheese. Can you think of anything better? It’s also very hard to screw up Potato bake. But some people actually manage to. Using milk instead of cream, using no spices/flavourings. All of this leaves it quite bland and boring. You see, my reasoning is that I don’t make potato bake THAT often. Maybe once every 2 months…so when I do make…
