Last week Eat Out published this article written by my good friend Sam Woulidge. I read through the “30 Things to eat before you die”, salivating as I read. I have not eaten most of the things listed in the article but I have at least heard of all of them. Afterwards, the article created some buzz on Twitter and the conversation revolved mainly around the Crack Pie that Sam had listed. Over the last year, Crack Pie had popped into my life quite prominently. It has been on almost every food show I watch, I’ve met people who have eaten it and I have always wanted to make it…

Chicken & Chorizo Pie

Chicken pie is one of my ultimate comfort foods. Probably because my gran made a killer chicken pie and always had an enormous one standing proudly amongst the roasts and delicious vegetable dishes for our Sunday lunches. My gran’s chicken pie was always something rather majestic. She made sure the edges were beautifully crimped but ensured me she did so in a casual manner; the filling was always rich and fragrant with hints of nutmeg, cloves and white pepper. I also loved how she wasn’t shy with the filling and made sure that there wasn’t a ton of pastry compared to the amount of filling. I’m a pastry lover…

It’s the 1st of August. How is it the 1st of August already? I say it every year and every year I feel like it’s going faster and faster. I sometimes feel overwhelmed at how quickly the years seem to be flying past me. When I was in school I was SO excited when the year’s would fly past because it would mean our December holidays were upon us, but now, I don’t know how I’m going to get everything done I still need to get done this year. But then, this is how I always feel and what doesn’t get done this year, always seems to get done the…

Banana Cream Pie

This is the second week that I’ve started off with a dessert recipe, but during Winter, sometimes that’s all you need. And this being my birthday week, it’s even more justified. Banana Cream Pie is something I’ve been dying to try. As I’ve mentioned before, I have quite a fascination with American food and I’ve ventured into it just slightly. We only recently got The Food Network in South Africa and I’ve been kind of hooked on some of those shows. Some, I don’t care for as much but The Barefoot Contessa (Ina Garten – I love you!) and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives have been two of my favourites. DDD…

Chicken Cottage Pie with 3-Vegetable Topping

I am really not a fan of Cottage Pie. You see, I like a bit of texture to my food. I like when there’s something I can bite into or something that adds a bit of crunch, and with Cottage Pie, well there just isn’t. It’s all a bit baby food-y to me. So when one of my readers asked me for an easy cottage pie recipe, I was a bit disappointed because I knew I would have to make it to see if it was really easy and really delicious. I started thinking of ways to amp up the flavour but keep the cooking time to a minimum and…

As you might remember, I asked my readers to give me some suggestions of meals/recipes they’d like me to cook. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the awesome suggestions and I’m slowly making my way through the loooong list of recipes. One of the suggestions was for a Phyllo pie with Chicken, Mushrooms and Leeks by my friend Simone. I really liked the idea and as Simone and I are both counting calories, knew I had to help her out. This recipe isn’t fat free, but I’m pretty sure it’s as low in fat as any pie/pastry dish I’ve ever had. Phyllo Pastry is very low in fat as it’s made…

Milk Tart

Milktart is yet another one of those proudly South African favourites. And boy, it sure is a favourite in this household. However, this is not a traditional recipe for milktart, this one has a bit of a twist. Instead of using sugar to sweeten the ‘custard’, I used condensed milk. It adds a lovely creaminess as well as  really great flavour that you can only get from condensed milk. And you know something is good when a very loud Afrikaans family all go completely silent while eating it. And that’s exactly what happened when I served this as dessert last week. I made the pastry for the crust myself but…

Potato & Cheese Pie

Yet another Carb-loaded dish. There’s not a single thing I can think of that’s better on a cold winter’s day than loads of warm and comforting carbs. Add some cheese and cream and you have comfort heaven! So when I saw the idea for this potato pie in the latest issue of F&HE, I knew I had to try it. I didn’t really look at the recipe, just the gorgeous photo and thus, my recipe is probably slightly different to theirs. I added loads of cheese to mine to make it really moorish and the end result was really delicious. I think this would be PERFECT with Sunday roast or…

Chicken Pie

As you might remember, I posted about the wonderful thing that is pastry last week. And I promised I would post my recipe for Chicken Pie. My first memories of Chicken Pie involves my gran, Sundays and a table buckling under the weight of the amazing spread she used to prepare for us. My gran’s chicken pie was always just the way it should be. Loads of filling with crisp and light pastry with a hint of cloves and nutmeg. Comfort is personified in my gran’s chicken pie. And although I don’t always follow her recipe, mine is not too shabby! I like to add different vegetables to my Chicken…
