Pancakes with cinnamon sugar

As a born-and-bred Afrikaans girl, Pancakes with Cinnamon Sugar is engrained into almost every child-hood memory I have of rainy days. My mom firmly believed that pancakes were to be made to soothe away the sadness of us not being able to play outside because of the rain. And to this day when it rains, I want pancakes with cinnamon sugar. I am now even carrying on this tradition with my kids. As I mentioned in my Milk Tart Cake post, cinnamon has some strange comforting quality that Afrikaans people are just drawn to. Most of our sweet comfort foods contain it. From Milk tart and pancakes with cinnamon sugar…

Quick and easy pancakes

During the week most of us are happy with a quick bowl of cereal and some fruit for breakfast, but over weekends when we have a bit more time, it’s nice to spoil ourselves and our families with something special. When the folks from Kellogg’s challenged me to make something with their new Special K Oats & Honey, I was incredibly excited. I’ve eaten Special K since I was a student and am particularly fond of the Red Berries product. I knew that I would have fun developing recipes around the newest addition to their cereal family and once I tasted Special K Oats & Honey, I was hooked. It’s…

Chocolate-Amarula Crepe Cake

This is one of those show-stopper cakes that will impress your guests to no end. It does take a little work but it’s all very worth it. I first saw a crepe cake on Martha Stewart’s site and have wanted to try it ever since but knew I needed a special occasion for it and Easter is just the occasion I’ve been waiting for. You can play around with the flavours and omit the Amarula if you wish but it definitely adds a lovely creamy taste and flavour. I would love to try it again with lemon curd as a filling and a lemony glaze drizzled all over the…

Since I was a little girl, I’ve always loved flapjacks (or what the rest of the world call pancakes/hot cakes) for breakfast. There’s something so indulgent and satisfying about a pile of warm, doughy flapjacks covered in a shiny, golden layer of syrup that instantly puts a smile on my face. As I’ve grown older (and hopefully wiser), I realised that although delicious, this is not exactly the healthiest way to start your day. So now I keep this as a breakfast to serve on special days or days where I feel like spoiling my family. By adding ricotta to these flap jacks, they become fluffy and incredibly light (which…

FOR AN UPDATED POST, CLICK HERE Recently, I’ve been on a real quest to cook as proudly South African as I can. It wasn’t actually a conscious decision, just something that kind of happened. It’s just so easy in the colder months to venture deeper into your roots and cook real home food. Especially as South Africa is famous for stews, curries and the type of comfort food you can only dream of. Malva pudding, Tamatie bredie and Pancakes with Cinnamon-sugar has to be the best of them all. Almost every person I know wants Pancakes with cinnamon sugar on a cold or rainy day. It’s just the way we…
