Greek Style Lamb Shanks

Before mentioning ANYTHING about this recipe, I have to thank all of you for the incredible support you’ve shown me over the last week. Shooting for Pasella (South-African variety TV show) has been one of the most exciting and fun things I’ve done in my life and even though it took me a while to get used to the camera and crew, it really showed me that this is something I’d love to do. And thank you so much for all the kind comments and saying I’m a “natural” on TV. That is probably one of the best compliments I’ve ever received. Now back to this recipe. When the producers…

Baked Fussili pasta with Ham and Cheese

I’m sure when you see I’ve posted yet ANOTHER pasta recipe you sigh and think, ” Really? Again?” But I just can’t help it. I think in this household, we’ve eaten pasta once a week for as long as I can remember. When we were little, my dad would call spaghetti “wurmpies” (little worms) and even though we only ever really ate it with bolognese sauce (remember, my mom wasn’t the most adventurous cook), pasta in and shape or form brings back intense memories for me. I think it’s mostly because I link pasta to my dad, and not only because he works with Italians and thinks he’s Italian half…

Baked fish with Lemon Butter

You know you’ve got crazy family when your aunt arrives at your house from Cape Town with a giant Kingklip, wrapped in cling wrap and foil. Yes, it was frozen and YES, she did fly with it in her suitcase from Cape Town. I was very grateful that she brought me such a nice gift but I was also shocked, and relieved that it didn’t start defrosting in between her clothes..yuck! Let me just start by saying that I KNOW Kingklip is considered Orange status on the SASSI list. I don’t buy it myself, ever, and I never order it in restaurants but this was a gift from a family…

Marinara Sauce

As you might recall from my Cheesy Meatballs post, I have an intense desire to be like a real Italian Mama one day. I want my children to adore me like Italian children adore their mothers and I want my children to know that at my house, there will always be food and laughter to comfort and nourish them. But, just like I said in my Cheesy Meatballs post, I can dream of being a little Italian Mama until I’m blue in the face, because I’ll never be little nor Italian. But what I can do, is strive to cook like one. I might have the wrong idea here, but…

Linguini with Garlic & Mushrooms

Sometimes, all I need is a bowl of comforting pasta. I don’t even care what sauce/flavourings I have on it. I just want perfectly cooked pasta. Even something as simple as garlic-butter would be perfect. But alas, my family expect more of me than just garlic-butter spaghetti. So I have to compromise and give them something slightly more substantial but I still need it to be easy-peasy and no-fuss. My family have come to expect a few Vegetarian meals from me a week. I don’t always do Meatless Monday but I do Meatless twice a week generally so I feel I make up for it. I have said it many…

Stuffed Potato small (1 of 1)

So as you probably know by now, my family and I are on holiday at the moment as South Africa is celebrating our wonderful Summer (although right now it’s more like Cape Town in Winter… rainy, windy and misty). We are incredibly fortunate to be in one of the most beautiful areas of the country close to the Garden Route. I know I promised posts about all the wonderful things we’ll be doing but honestly, I just don’t get time to spend in front of my laptop. If we’re not busy playing on the beach or exploring on the rocks, we’re eating ice cream or cooking something incredible! This holiday…

Thai Beef Salad

Now I know that Thai food has been around for a long time and almost everyone I know likes it. But still, I rarely venture into that direction of cooking and I’m not sure why. I think I’m always a bit worried that my dad isn’t going to like it. You see, my dad is very conventional with his tastes. I think he’s at his happiest when I serve him garlic-butter Spaghetti. So adding ginger, lemon grass and the like to a dish might give him the fright of his life. While I was grilling the steaks and making the dressing, I asked my younger brother to come have a…

herb chicken & potato bake 003

Whilst thinking of ways to best showcase herbs, I knew I had to do something with Chicken. I love chicken because it’s such a great ‘canvas’ to carry other flavours. And one of my favourite ways of cooking it, is just like this. Loads of lemon juice, mustard and herbs. The chicken just comes alive after being marinated in this mixture and after roasting, the salty skin is just to die for. This marinade can also be done in a two different ways. You could either just blitz everything in the food processor until it’s a thick-ish paste to spread on the chicken or you could chop all the herbs…
