First of all, I’d like to congratulate Kiara Rossouw for winning Justin Bonello’s, Cooked Weekends Away. The book is on it’s way Kiara! If you didn’t win last week, don’t despair. This week we are giving away Antony Worrall Thompson’s GI Diet, thanx to Penguin Publishers. This really is a great book to have if you’re looking at eating healthier but not sure where to start. The book discusses the Low GI Diet in depths and gives a detailed list of low, medium and high GI foods. It also gives you loads of tips on how to make ordinary dishes low gi etc.The Recipes range from fabulous breakfast ideas like…
I am the type of person who believes that fattening foods shouldn’t be tampered with. I don’t like the idea of low-fat Macaroni & Cheese or Diet burgers and chips. I think there is a reason that these things are so fattening, you are only meant to be eating them once every 2-3 months. Making them low-fat/low-sugar etc. takes the indulgence away. But I did a shoot for Avocado Magazine last week and I was asked to develop baking recipes for special diets. Lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, diabetic, etc. I cam across the most amazing yoghurt cake recipe that is so low in fat but is probably the most moist…
Even though it’s been bloody hot in Pretoria for the last couple of days, it seems like we might finally get some PROPER rain soon and with rain, I always want a bit of comfort food. BUT, because it’s still summer, I can’t make heavy and rich food because it’s just too hot in the kitchen. This potato curry is the perfect thing. It gives you just enough warmth and comfort but without making you feel full and hot. Unless you add a lot of chillies of course! I decided to poach the eggs in clingwrap, hence the funny shape, but everyone commented on how cute they looked. I also…
I have been on a serious foodie mission the last few weeks. I am aiming to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen. Yesterday it was an absolute scorcher in Pretoria and I just couldn’t be in the kitchen for more than 5 minutes. Also, when it’s that hot, I don’t feel like eating a heavy meal. Heavy, being anything that was either in the oven or in a pan for more than 5 minutes. So when I saw these thin Rump steaks at Woolies, I knew they would be the perfect dinner solution. I just love flash frying steaks and pairing them with other yummy toppings on…
When I was first asked to review Jamie Oliver’s new book by Yuppiechef, I was over the moon. I have always been a Jamie fan, since his days of being the ‘naked chef’. I was only about 14 when The Naked Chef started airing on the Carlton Food Network but I was absolutely enticed. His lisp, his charm and his Essex accent were all enough to make a teenage girl swoon. And I haven’t stopped swooning ever since. When I received the package I was so excited and I urge all of you to buy something from Yuppiechef JUST to receive one of their packages. Beautifully made up with gorgeous…
I was invited to the Simonsberg “Luncheon under the Trees” this week and I was absolutely ecstatic. Not only do I live for any type of foodie event, but I am the absolute biggest chees-aholic in the world. Now I know a lot of people like cheese, many even LOVE it. But I have never come across anyone who can eat as much cheese as I can. I am absolute certain that’s why I struggle with my weight, because I refuse to give up cheese. Most poeple who love cheese love a few different kinds but there is not one cheese I have tasted that I don’t like. Everything from…
Now I know that Thai food has been around for a long time and almost everyone I know likes it. But still, I rarely venture into that direction of cooking and I’m not sure why. I think I’m always a bit worried that my dad isn’t going to like it. You see, my dad is very conventional with his tastes. I think he’s at his happiest when I serve him garlic-butter Spaghetti. So adding ginger, lemon grass and the like to a dish might give him the fright of his life. While I was grilling the steaks and making the dressing, I asked my younger brother to come have a…
I know, I know…Stew in Summer? I know you’re thinking I must be insane. But I’m not. This is quick to make and light to eat. Not exactly the kind of stew most of us are used to. I know that everyone wants light, fresh and fast meals in Summer because it’s too hot to stand in the kitchen for hours. But every now and then you still need that little bit of comfort that only a bowl of saucy stew can give you. This is the perfect Summer substitute. I’m not lying when I said this took me 10 minutes to cook. If you want to serve it with…
Also known as, Meatballs with Spaghetti. But no matter how you say it, this meal conjures up images of little old Italian ladies feeding their massive families and their sons just glowing in the love that is Mama’s cooking. I so hope to be one of those ladies one day. Although I’ll never be little nor Italian! I used Lamb mince for my meatballs but only because that’s what I had in the freezer. You could use any mince for this and it would be delicious. You could also make your own tomato sauce but using a few tins of tomato puree and chopped tomatoes just makes this so much…
Summer time = Salad time for me. We have salad as a main meal at least once a week in Summer. I absolutely adore salad in summer. And I’m loving all the new combo’s I’ve been trying lately. Now, I’m not a person who like fruit with meat. Especially NOT when it’s warm! But I am just infatuated with fresh mango, strawberries and nectarines in salads. This, however, I didn’t change much. Caesar salad is a classic that I believe shouldn’t be tampered with too much. The dressing is zingy, fresh and flavourful and the salad itself is kept simple with just some lettuce, croutons and parmesan. I added some…
