Even though us as South Africans don’t celebrate Halloween with quite the same gusto as other nations, especially Americans, I still try to do a little something for it every year. Usually my older brother and his wife have Halloween parties but for some or other reason (having young twins) we can never go. But I’ve decided that next year, come hell or high water, I will dress up as a green/sexy witch (does such a thing exist?) and I will celebrate Halloween properly. Now I also know that a lot of South Africans think that Halloween is “the devil’s birthday’” or something equally ridiculous. For once and for all…it…
I have come to the conclusion that the reason why my mojo has been slightly wonky over the last week, is because I am now trying to cook healthier. I know, I know…healthy food CAN be delicious. But it’s so much easier to add a pot of cream and a handful of cheese to make something look and taste more appetizing. And then I started thinking about the masses of you out there who are probably also dieting or trying to lose a couple of kg’s and I thought if I’m struggling to come up with inventive and tasty but yet healthy dishes, surely you must be struggling too? So…
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I LOVE QUICHE. For me, there is nothing better on a warm night than eating delicious quiche with a crisp salad. I think the love of this combination stems back to when I was a little girl and my mother used to take me to Tiffany’s, a little coffee shop in the mall close to us. She used to order Quiche Lorraine and it always came with a green salad with the most AMAZING salad dressing. I remember licking the cucumber and lettuce, to the utter embarrassment and disgust of my poor mom, just to get the salad dressing off. I…
I’m still working on getting my mojo back 100% but I find it hard to concentrate on cooking and recipe development when I have SO much other stuff on my plate. I’m planning a Nautical Baby Shower, a Vintage Candy Shoppe themed second birthday for my twins and our December holidays. While that’s going on I still have events to attend, I’m worried about my brother who is madly in love and writing his matric finals (never a good combination) and I’m trying to keep my family fed, bathed and just generally alive. Now I know what you’re thinking, especially if you are a working mother, “I do all of…
When the kind people at Penguin Books first sent me “She’s Leaving Home” by Monica Trápaga, I was really excited to start reading it. The cover along with the whole book is so well designed and all you want to do is curl up on the couch and start reading. The great thing about this book is that, yes, it is a recipe book, but it’s also filled with stories about Monica’s daughter, Lil’s travels and cooking. Monica decided to write this book for her daughter when Lil decided to leave home at age 21. The book started as a scrapbook full of crusty pages and inserts. Now, Lil is…
First of all, I need to congratulate Simone Cameron for winning the Antony Worral Thompson GI DIET book yesterday. I know I made this one quite hard but Simone persevered and finally got the answers right. Here are the answers. 1. Brown Mushroom 2. Pineapple 3. Uncooked Crab During the last week I’ve been feeling less and less inspired to cook dinner at night. Almost like my mojo has been disappearing slowly. Which is quite a scary thing. I think it’s a combination of having so many things to plan (babyshower for a friend, twins’ second birthday party, our trip to Stilbay in December) , the fact that I am…
Ok, so I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails but none of them have them right. Well not the last ingredient anyway. I see I have all of you a bit stumped at this point, which was exactly my intention! Here are the 3 pictures again. Keep guessing… and at 10h30 a clue will be posted at the top of the blog.
I was so not in the mood to cook dinner last night. All I wanted to do was watch Oprah (yes, I watch Oprah…stop judging!) and do nothing. But I got off my lazy bum and threw together, what I thought would be quite a boring and bland pasta. Well, it wasn’t! It was actually really, flipping good. Don’t you just love that? When you think your dinner is going to be boring and it turns out to be something quite fab? There’s not much to be said about this dish, other than it took me literally 22 minutes from doing nothing, to having it on the plate. I walked…
I have had this incredible craving for good, home-made chicken burgers for quite a while now. Why, I don’t know as I’ve never had a home-made chicken burger before. At one of my favourite fast food places (don’t judge me) they sell spicy crispy chicken burgers and I don’t care what you think of me after saying this, but I could eat those all day, everyday. I love how the soft breadroll is contrasted by the incredibly crispy chicken burger and the tangy mayo lingers in your mouth just long enough. *drool* But being on a bit of a health quest lately, I knew I couldn’t go out and buy…
